For some reason, it felt like I had never left. I was last here in April for it’s grand opening.
When I turned the corner onto Boulevard de San Rafael and made my way into the neon district, I instinctively ended up at the doors of the Rex Neon Center — a place instrumental in the work of Cuban artist Kadir Lopez’s Habana Light Project. When I walked in, I ran into Adolfo Nodal who has teamed up with Lopez to restore and relight dozens of signs throughout the city. It was nice to find a familiar place and face on a day when I felt a little bit lonely in this big city that I was still learning to navigate.
The space itself has a history as a long forgotten theater. I’ll share more about it later. But for now...in honor of today’s TV commercial audition, I’m sharing a photo of one of Lopez’s works of art. I’m sure this piece means many things, but at first glance it’s an homage to the Zenith Electronics Corp., America’s last television manufacturer.
Founded in 1918 by two radio operators, Zenith’s proud history began with the world’s first portable radio in 1924, it established itself as an early leader in black-and-white TVs, then later invented the first hand-held remote control device in 1956.
Zenith fought for years to remain independent, but in 1995, like others before it, it sold its remaining stake to an overseas electronics company.
Well...after some time well spent BEHIND the camera, I guess I’m back at it in FRONT of the camera. As always, I’m thankful for my agents who work so hard for me and for the opportunity to ham it up whenever I get the chance.
Here’s to the magic of TV — and my chance to appear on it once again. 📺✨
